Guardianship Representatives provide professional advocacy for individuals without family members or other support systems in the areas of medical, legal and personal finances.

Guardianship

Roles

Guardian of Person

  • Ensure ward’s personal needs are met
  • Advocates for necessary services
  • Consents for medical procedures and treatment
  • Advocates for least restrictive placement setting

Guardian of Estate

  • Ensures financial obligations are met
  • Ensures ward’s personal property is protected
  • Applies for local, state and federal programs such as social security, medical assistance/Medicare and food share

Representative Payee

Included with Guardian of Estate

  • Appointed by SSA to receive Social Security and/or SSI benefits to manage the beneficiary’s money
  • Use benefits to pay for the current and foreseeable needs of the individual

  • Properly saves any benefits not needed to meet current needs
  • Files annual representative payee accounting report to social security administration
  • Keeps records of all payments received and how they are spent and/or saved
  • Completes written reports accounting for the use of funds
